Looking a bit like a refuse can on wheels, and emitting only beeps and whistles, R2-D2 is the other half of the "Laurel and Hardy droid ensemble with C-3PO. The brave little astomech droid manages to help the heroes of the Rebel Alliance countless times. But it wasn't always a mechanized creation on screen, in Star Wars, in fact, Artoo was more often a fiberglass shell around 3-foot-8 British actor Kenny Baker. That's because George Lucus wanted to try to get the character of a human into a mechanical shape.

Baker has been a show-business professional for more than 40 years, starting at 16 in a stage show, Burton Lester's Midgets. He traveled the world with circuses and ice shows before breaking into film and television. Baker worked closely with British effects expert John Stears when he was building the Artoo shell, but that didn't make working conditions much better.

Baker could move Artoo by sliding his feet forward-non-returnable ratchets kept the droid from sliding backwards-and he could lurch from side to side with the help of built-in air jets. There was a small seat inside the Artoo shell, but it was hard work and claustrophobic. The actual remote-control R2-D2 -the one with three legs instead of two-wasn't always reliable, especially in the Tunisian desert. And the only way to really stop it was to get three men to physically pick it up!
