Description
The protocol droid C-3PO, nicknamed "Goldenrod" by a frequently frustrated Han Solo, provided much of the comic relief for Star Wars. Inside the heavy vinyl, fiberglass and metal costume was British actor Anthony Daniels, who initially fold his agent that he didn't want to be considered for the role, which required someone small who was good at mime.
Daniels changed his mind after meeting creator George Lucas and seeing some of illustrator Ralph McQuarrie's breathtaking production paintings. While Lucas originally conceived Threepio as having the voice and personality of a slick American used-car saleman", the casting of Daniels convinced him that a clipped British "butler" accent would be better. C-3PO is fussy, somewhat neurotic, often gloomy and always obvious. "There's no guile, no deviousness, no mystery, Daniels says.
Working inside the costume-which initially took two hours to put on-was tough for the TV and stage actor. Fellow actors couldn't see his eyes, nor he theirs. "I bumped into them, I hurt them, I jabbed them with my elbows, and I clanked," he says. Still, he loved being the center of attention in his scenes. "If you furn an actor's suit into gold and make him walk around like a demented lobster being put in a boiling pot, then people are going to look at that.
