Description
The end of World war II brought major changes and reorganization to the American Armed forces. On September 18, 1947, amid this flurry of activity, the United States Air Force was established as a separate branch of the military. It would not be long before the new service would be tested-in combat. On June 25, 1950, troops from North Korea Invaded the southern part of that country and started what would come to be known as The Korean War.
This conflict would pose a number of new problems for the men and women of the United States Air Force. Relying heavily on bomber-lighter units in Guam, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Japan, many of the Air Force pilots were flying into combat in propeller driven World War II airplanes with limited range. It was a prim lest of courage for Air Force pilots who found themselves fighting a modern war with dated weapons. Still, they fought on. As the United Nations Forces moved the battle line closer to the Chinese border, the Chinese entered the war with MiG 15 jets. American pilots, armed with propeller driven aircraft, were facing a jet-age enemy. Daly the experience and uncommon valor of the U.N. pilots pilots enabled them to persevere As the war continued, fighter pilots of United States Air Force obtained faster more lethal jet-propelled warbirds like the F86A Sabre and the FB4E thunderjet. These planes were more than a match for the MiGs, enabling the valiant soldiers of the Air Force to remain steadfast in their resistance to aggression.
