The National Hockey League boasts what is referred to as "the greatest collection of hardware in the world of sports". Of the eighteen trophies awarded by the league, the most coveted by far is the internationally famous Stanley Cup", professional hockey's "holy grail". The original cup was donated in 1892 by Sir Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl of Derby. Lord Stanley purchased the cup for ten guineas (about $50.00 at the time) intending it to be presented to "the championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada". The first winners of the Stanley Cup were the Montreal AAA Hockey Club in 1892, fifteen years before the birth of the NHL. In fact, NHL teams only began competing for the cup in 1926. From 1910 to 1926, teams from the National Hockey Association battled head to head for the trophy. In 1946, the NHL took exclusive control of the Stanley Cup, and the highly esteemed award remains in the league to this day.
