On November 6, 1869, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, teams from Rutgers and Princeton played what historians consider to be the first college football game. More like soccer than football, the game used a round, inflated ball that could be dribbled and batted, but not thrown or carried.

In 1874, the transition from soccer to football began. Harvard invited the team from McGill University of Montreal, Canada, to Massachusetts for a soccer game. But when the McGill team warmed up, its players were running with the ball, as in a game of rugby. Harvard's rules, based on soccer, did not allow players to run with the ball. It was decided that two games would be played: one under Harvard's rules, one under McGill's rules.

The rugby game ended in a 0-0 tie with Harvard's players clearly preferring those rules. Teams at other Ivy League universities also adopted the rugby rules and so the early game of football had taken the first step in its genesis towards the modern game we know today.
