Description
Lu Zhishen, nicknamed "Flowery Monk" because of his beautiful embroidered robes, is an important character in the novel *Water Margin*, one of the 108 heroes of Liangshan. His given name was Lu Da, and after becoming a monk, he took the Dharma name Zhishen. Lu Da originally served under the military governor of Weizhou, holding the position of military commander. He was pursued by the authorities after killing the local bully Zhen Guanxi with three punches for the sake of the vulnerable woman Jin Cuilian. During his escape, through the introduction of Jin Cuilian's husband, Zhao Beiwai, Lu Da became a monk at the Wenshu Monastery on Mount Wutai. The abbot, Zhizhen, said, "A spark of spiritual light is worth a thousand pieces of gold. The Buddha's teachings are vast; I bestow upon you the name Zhishen."
He finally found a place to stay and lived a life of anonymity. However, Lu Zhishen found it difficult to abide by the rules and regulations in the temple. As a result, he got drunk and broke into Mount Wutai. Elder Zhizhen had no choice but to send him to the Xiangguo Temple in Bianliang, Tokyo, to settle down. Before parting, he gave Lu Zhishen four lines of verse: "Rise when you encounter a forest, become rich when you encounter a mountain, prosper when you encounter water, and stop when you encounter a river."
While guarding the vegetable garden at the Great Xiangguo Temple, Lu Zhishen subdued a local gang of ruffians. In the garden, he uprooted a willow tree and encountered Lin Jie, nicknamed "Leopard Head," the instructor of the 800,000 Imperial Guards of Dongjing (Kaifeng), with whom he formed a sworn brotherhood. Later, Lin Jie was framed by Grand Commandant Gao Ti and exiled to Cangzhou. Lu Zhishen, worried about him, secretly protected him. In the Wild Boar Forest, the escorts Dong Chao and Xue Ba attempted to kill Lin Jie, but Lu Zhishen intervened and saved him. He then escorted Lin Jie for seventy li (approximately 35 kilometers) to Cangzhou. However, Lu Zhishen was then forced by Gao Ti to flee the Great Xiangguo Temple.
Lu Zhishen wandered the Jianghu (江湖, the martial arts world), and later, together with Yang Zhi, a descendant of the Yang family generals, and Cao Zheng, a member of the Lin family, known as "The Knife-Wielding Ghost," and Zou Neng, the leader of Baozhu Temple on Erlong Mountain in Qingzhou, they became outlaws on Erlong Mountain. Wu Song, the Tiger Slayer, also joined them after becoming a wandering monk. The imperial general Hu Yanzhuo's linked cavalry formation was broken by Xu Ning, the Golden Spear Master of Liangshan, and Hu Yanzhuo fled to the prefect of Qingzhou, Murong Yanda, who ordered him to attack Lu Zhishen and his followers. This led to the gathering of heroes from Erlong Mountain, Peach Blossom Mountain, and White Tiger Mountain. Song Jiang led the Liangshan leaders down the mountain to reinforce the heroes from the three mountains. Later, everyone went to Liangshan, and Lu Zhishen reunited with Lin Chong. After all 108 heroes of Liangshan were gathered, their seating order was determined, with Lu Zhishen as the Heavenly Lone Star, ranking thirteenth and becoming the leader of the infantry. Soon after, Song Jiang expressed his hope for amnesty from the imperial court in his poem "Man Jiang Hong". Wu Song, Li Zhe, and Lu Zhishen said, "The entire court is now filled with treacherous officials, who are more honest than we are. They've been dyed black; how can they be washed clean? Amnesty won't help! Let's take our leave now, and tomorrow we'll each go our own way." After Song Jiang and the others accepted the amnesty, Lu Zhishen accompanied Song Jiang back to Mount Wutai to pay respects to Elder Zhizhen. The master said, "Disciple, you've been gone for several years; killing and arson are no easy feat!" Before Lu Zhishen departed, Elder Zhizhen gave him four lines of verse: "Capture in summer, seize in winter. Reach peace with the tide, find tranquility with the letter."
Later, Song Jiang was ordered by the emperor to suppress the Fang La rebellion, and fought a great battle at Wulong Ridge. Lu Zhishen pursued the enemy general Xiahou Cheng, but lost his way and entered the deep mountains. With the guidance of a monk, he escaped from the Entangled Well, captured Fang La alive, and made a great contribution. Song Jiang was overjoyed and advised Zhishen to return to secular life, saying that he had already turned to ashes and did not want to be an official. He said that being captured and given a clean place to settle down would be enough. Song Jiang also advised him to become the abbot of a famous mountain, to glorify his clan, and to repay his parents. Lu Zhishen said, "I don't want any of that! Having more is useless. Capturing Tutu's corpse is enough." "That night, he stayed at the Liuhe Temple in Hangzhou. Upon hearing news of the Qiantang River and lakes, Lu Zhishen had an epiphany. The Zen Master Dazhong of Jingshan commented on Lu Zhishen's words: 'Lu Zhishen, Lu Zhishen! Rising from the greenwood. Two eyes that ignite fire, a heart that kills. Suddenly, he went with the tide, truly nowhere to be found! He could make the sky full of flying white jade, and turn the earth into gold.' The lines 'He could make the sky full of flying white jade, and turn the earth into gold' are the work of a Buddha, something only a Buddha could do. This true hero who loved to fight injustice all his life-Lu Zhishen-after death attained transcendence and became a Buddha."
