The Sturzkampfflugzeug, nicknamed 'Stuka' was a single engine plane that was in service with the German Luftwaffe from 1937-1945. It flew with a crew of two, the pilot and the rear gunner. Dive bombers like the Stuka would dive vertically at a target, release bombs while in descent and immediately ascend after release. The descent allowed the pilots more time to set their bombing aim. The Stuka had inverted gull-wings that made a W-form with landing gears that looked like talons, giving it the appearance of a fearsome bird-of-prey. With its ominous shape and the color of night, it made an intimidating scream in it's dive and had whistles fitted onto the fins of the bombs, signaling their attack, making it a terrifying predator from the sky to people on the ground.

These fierce bombers led the way for the lightning assault (blitzkrieg) of Poland, then France in 1940. Neither country was able to withstand the thundering hammer of the Stulka. In its day, it was the epitome of 'hi-tech' fighter planes.
