Description
Springfield, U.S.A. - home of THE SIMPSONS! Whether freezing your brain with an ice-cold Chutney Squishee at the Kwik-E-Mart, choking down imitation fruit beverages at Springfield Elementary or drowning your sorrows at Moe's, you can't help but drink in the radioactive charm that is Springfield's alone. Yes, a visit to Springfield brings a glow to the heart - that never, ever goes away! Of course, the most animated family in Springfield, and the most colorful family on television has to be THE SIMPSONS. HOMER, the head of the family- though certainly not the brains behind it - works at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. MARGE takes pride in both her family and her hair; 10-year old BART has the radically refined skills of a mischievous underachiever; LISA, the "smart one", is a jazz-sax-playing, eight-year old vegetarian; and baby MAGGIE conveys a wide array of emotions via various pacifier sucks.
THE SIMPSONS, created by cartoonist Matt Groening, first appeared in 1987 as a series of 30-second shorts, produced by Groening, for the FOX series, "The Tracey Ullman Show." Response to the spots were so overwhelming that THE SIMPSONS earned a show of their own, premiering on FOX as a half-hour Christmas special on December 17, 1989, and then as a regular series on January 14, 1990.
Since the show's first Sunday night episode - titled "Bart the Genius", THE SIMPSONS has received Newsweek and TIME Magazine covers in 1990, was launched into national syndication in 1993, televised its 100th episode in 1994, surpassed "The Flintstones" in 1997 as the longest-running primetime animated series in history, and premiered its 200th episode in 1998. In 1999, the show entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running primetime television series in history. To top it all off, they were featured in the first 3D animated Imax film, CyberWorld in October 2000. The large format film features a segment from "The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror VI" in which Homer crosses into the 4th dimension. Now, in production on its 14th season and currently television's longest-running sitcom, THE SIMPSONS continues to not only mimic pop culture, but to master it.
Through almost 300 episodes, THE SIMPSONS not only transformed the way the television industry and audiences perceive animation and the comedy series in general, but became the standard against which all other shows are measured. Singled out by the New York Times as "... quite simply, the best show on television", and by TIME Magazine as the "Best TV Show of the 20th Century", THE SIMPSONS earned not only its Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the loyalty of millions of viewers and fans around the world, but numerous awards and achievements.
