The Lone Ranger & Tonto Poseable Action Figures 1998 Exclusive Premiere NRFB

The Lone Ranger was first aired on the radio in 1933, and in 1949 it was brought to TV which was then in its infancy as an entertainment medium. It became a top-rated hit by 1950, a forerunner of the later adult Westerns that dominated TV programming in the 50's and 60's.
The opening episode describes the Lone Ranger as one of a posse of six Texas Rangers tracking a gang of desperadoes. The Rangers were lured into a canyon and ambushed. Five were killed, and the sixth, young John Reid, was left for dead, but was discovered and nursed back to health by an Indian friend named Tonto. Reid, played by Clayton Moore, donned a mask and called himself "The Lone Ranger," vowing to avenge the deaths of his comrades.
Tonto, played by a mixed-blood Mohawk Indian named Jay Silverheels, vowed to accompany his "Kemo Sabe" translation: "Trusty Scout on his mission. When the pair tracked down and defeated their enemy, they decided to stay together and fight for justice throughout the Old West, always astride their trusted mounts, Silver and Scout.
The Lone Ranger and Tonto never actually killed anyone, and the show was popular with parents because of this fact, even though there was plenty of action and the good guys always won. At the and of every battle, The Lone Ranger would always leave behind a silver bullet, and his hearty "Hi-Yo Silver, away" became his familiar rallying cry.
The theme, William Tell's Overture, composed by G. Rossini in 1829, became one of the most recognizable themes in TV history. The show was last telecast in 1957, and was seen in re-runs until 1961.
