The Canadian Trip - May 1961

It was after this trip to Canada that President Kennedy recognized the political value of his beautiful wife. As she would do in so many other world capitals, Jackie charmed everyone-government officials as well as the public and the press. In Canada, she posed with Royal Canadian Mounted Police (whose uniforms inspired Jackie's red wool ensemble), planted trees at the Government House, brought a touch of elegance to state banquets and generally won the hearts of all Canadians. For the occasion, Oleg Cassini designed a red wool suit with a buttoned cowl collar, rounded shoulders, pockets and straight skirt. Complete with a matching beret, the ensemble created quite a sensation in Canada.

Indeed, before the Canadian trip there was concern that the interest in Jackie's clothes would overshadow the more important aspects of the trip. On the contrary, however, Jackie's warmth, charm and style proved to be an immeasurable asset to the work that her husband had set out to do. Her success in Canada was the first step in Jacqueline Kennedy's political evolution as a valuable component of the Kennedy mystique. It was the trip that boosted the young First Lady's confidence and enhanced ber Image at home and abroad.
