Ethel was a strong-willed child. Her father described her as "a jolly, naughty, whacky baby, too attractive for anything and thoroughly able to hold her own in the world." As Ethel grew, she absorbed her father's friendly nature and sense of responsibility and her mother's willingness to care for others, both emotionally and physically. Ethel was a popular, vivacious girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. One of the exciting elegant White House events during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency was Ethel's coming out party, however, she was most content when she was home with her family at Sagamore Hill.
