Description

The name alone conjures up dreams and summons sweet memories for millions of American women and children. A companion, confidante, and friend to more than three generations of little girls, the Barbie doll is now a force in American society.

Inspired by a little girl who spent hours dressing and undressing fashion paper dolls and creating fantasy lives for each, Barbie was designed originally with an expression-less face to allow children to project their own dreams. Barbie made her debut at the 1959 New York Toy Fair. Earlier that year, her specifications had been sent to the Orient where Japanese toy specialists crafted the prototype Barbie.

The 1959 Barbic measured 11½-inches high and featured the ideal body-long, elegantly sculpted legs, moveable arms and head, solid torso with petite waist, delicate features, and silky blonde or brunette hair styled in bangs and a ponytail. Her eyebrows appeared as an inverted "V" above eyes lined in blue and black with white irises and black pupils. Delicate white skin accentuated bright red nails and lips. Small tubes in the soles of her feet fit over prongs in a stand that held Barbie erect for dressing or display.

The Barbie doll's talented designers initially created a miniature wardrobe of 21 ensembles lovingly detailed with tiny buttons, satin linings, and miniature zippers. Girls could accessorize her with white sunglasses, open-toe shoes, even dainty hoop earrings. Her glamorous wardrobe also included a number of casual outfits and she was sold wearing a black and white knit maillot swimsuit.

True to a desire to make her come alive for each little girl, Barbie was introduced with a history and a family. Born on March 9 the daughter of Margaret Roberts, she was named Barbie Millicent Roberts. She graduated from Willow High School at seventeen with her best friends Ken Carson, Midge Hadley, Jody Perkins, and Francie Fairchild. Over the years, she has pursued a number of careers that reflect the changing roles of women-from airline stewardess to astronaut, registered nurse to doctor, fashion editor to businesswoman. And she has made each move in style.

In 1966 Color Magic Barbie was presented to all the young Barbie devotees. Something was unique with this new doll. With a wave of a magic wand and special Color Magic Changers, her hair would change from Midnight to Ruby Red or from Golden Blonde to Scarlet Flame. The colors could be changed back and forth over and over again. Even more amazing, Mattel introduced Color Magic fashions that also changed from one color to another. The process gave young Barbie fans many hours of joyful fun.

In 1976, Barbie was chosen doll of the century and sealed in the bi-centennial time capsule that is scheduled to be opened in 2076 on the nation's tri-centennial.

This Barbie by Peck-Aubry brings her full circle-back to the source of her original creation-to paper doll. Our artists have painstakingly recreated her look and trend-setting styles down to the last detail. We hope you enjoy your Barbie paper doll as much as the women and children before you, and find as much delight in playing with her as we have experienced in bringing her to you.
