A Borg drone designated Seven of Nine was stranded on Voyager after the crew survived an encounter with the Collective. Seven of Nine was confined to her regenerative alcove the Borg had built in the cargo bay. After Seven of Nine's connection to the Borg was severed, her human immune system began to reassert itself with a vengeance. The Emergency Medical Hologram™ (EMH) determined that the only way to save Seven of Nine's life was to remove the Borg implants. Commander Chakotay™ researched Voyager's data banks and found that Seven of Nine was once Annika Hansen, the young daughter of unconventional parents who fancied themselves explorers. Twenty years ago, they aimed their small ship for the Delta Quadrant and were never heard from again. Apparently, Annika and her parents were the first humans to be assimilated by the Borg. Although Seven of Nine refused to have her implants removed, Captain Kathryn Janeway" authorized the EMH to perform the surgery rather than let her die. Seven of Nine faces a difficult future, learning to assimilate herself into a human collective and to let go of her Borg past.
