Lieutenant Uhura® was assigned as communications officer aboard the original U.S.S. Enterprise™ NCC-1701 during its historic five-year mission under the command of Captain James Kirk. Born in 2239, her name is Swahili for "freedom."

Uhura was responsible for all communications aboard the starship and all contact with other vessels and planets, as well as Starfleet. If Kirk ordered, "Open a hailing frequency," Uhura was the bridge officer to do it. As a bridge officer, she was in the chain of command in the event that other senior officers were incapacitated. Uhura was cross-trained to fill in at other duty stations on the bridge and at least once assumed the helm position. In her off-hours, Uhura often serenaded her fellow crewmembers.

By 2284, Uhura was assigned as an instructor to Starfleet Academy", where the Enterprise served as a training vessel. In 2285, when it was discovered that Mr. Spock's Katra still existed within the mind of Doctor McCoy, Uhura joined Kirk's plan to retrieve Spock's body from the Genesis Planet against Starfleet orders.

Because of their actions Uhura and the Enterprise crew faced trial, but the charges were dropped after they saved Earth from a hostile space probe in 2286. In the years to follow, Uhura was called back to active service intermittently with Kirk. In 2293, after exposing a plot to sabotage peace negotiations between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, the legendary Enterprise crew stepped down from active service.
