Description

The wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer took place on July 29, 1981, at St Paul's Cathedral. More than 600,000 people lined the roads of London, hoping to glimpse the happy couple, and many millions more watched it on TV around the world.

The wedding was a nationwide celebration, waited for and watched by satellite television all around the world. St. Paul's Cathedral was chosen because St. Paul's will hold up to 3,000 people, hundreds more than Westminster Abbey. The last Prince of Wales to be married at St. Pauls was Henry VIII's elder brother, Arthur Tudor. That was in 1501 in the old St. Paul's which was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. This is the first time for more than three hundred years that the Heir to the throne of England has married a British subject. In 1659 Charles II's brother James (later James 11) married Lady Anne Hyde. It is also the first time for sixty years that Britain has had a Princess of Wales. The wedding was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Runcie.
