Hello! Welcome to beautiful Polynesia, which means many islands. All together there are 13 groups of tropical islands included in this vast South Pacific paradise. They form what is called The Polynesian Triangle.

Some well-known locations in the triangle include New Zealand, Tahiti and the Hawaiian Islands, which is the largest group. There are also many volcanic islands made of solid black lava rock, and surrounded by beaches of beautiful black sand!

I live with my family in a thatched hut made from bamboo and woven palm branches. It shades us from the mighty sun and lets the cool ocean breeze in.

Throughout the many islands of Polynesia, large families of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all live and work together, building huts, gathering food, and caring for children. To preserve peace and happiness among our people, it is our custom to speak only kind words to one another.

In the Hawaiian Islands especially, everyone looks forward to a feast called a luau, where the finest ia (fish), roasted pig, poi (taro root paste), coconuts and bananas are served with great delight. The luau is also a time for dancing! Women dance in traditional grass skirts, like the one I'm wearing. Men perform, too often juggling torches of fire!

As the sun passes across the tropics, it gently heats the water, making the ocean a wonderful spot for canoeing, fishing and surfing.
