Description
In 1937, 05 Army authorities issued specifications for the development of a new combat planer high altitude interceptor capable of fast and high ascent up to 20,000 feet in 6 minutes. A very daunting request that many defense suppliers could not meet.
A then small defense contractor company's lead designers came up with a revolutionary planer the P-38 Lightning Interceptor. This amazingly fast and agile plane with its futuristic shape and twin supercharged V-12 engines made it the terror of the skies in the 1940's. (Later, the Germans were to call it Der Gabelschwans Teutel The Devil with the Forked Tail). The guns were located on the nose allowing for better concentration of fire and aim.
The F-38 Lightning Interceptor was employed as a fighter-bomber and as a night fighter. Some of the American WWII aces marked their victories with this plane. With its large nose section, it was also good for camera set-up for reconnaissance missions.
Especially in the Pacific Theater, it ruled the skies. Hurtling it dominated the Japanese fighters. Able to fly farther and faster than any aircraft of its day, ng through the air at 290 m.p.h., the P-38 was a force to be reckoned with.
The P-36 Lightning Interceptor a graceful and deadly foe.
