In a fierce battle of attrition, only 9 of the starters complete the 500-mile ride to cross the finish line. Buddy Lazier, confined to a wheelchair just two months earlier after a crash in Phoenix, seems an unlikely challenger for Indy glory this year. But with seven laps to go, he makes his move in his Reynard/Ford and passes leader Davy Jones. In a frenzied final lap, Lazier holds off Jones' valiant, last-gasp challenge to win the race by less than 0.7 seconds. It is the third closest Indy 500 finish in history, and one of the most exciting!
