During the illness of her mother, Mrs. Harrison, Mary McKee acted as First Lady; her two children provided much relaxation and entertainment for their grandparents during their visits to Washington. After her mother's death in 1892, Mary McKee assumed full charge of the household and acted as hostess for the remainder of her father's term. She made a great many friends and performed her official duties with dignity. After leaving the White House she continued to lead a very full life, always interested in social work, and during World War I was actively engaged in relief work.
