LUCY WEBB HAYES came to the White House with her husband Rutherford B. Hayes, in 1877, with considerable experience in official entertaining. She had acted as hostess for her husband when he was in Congress and during his five years as Governor of Ohio. Mrs. Hayes was the first college graduate to preside in the White House. Her Alma Mater was Wesleyan Female College in Cincinnati. Her wide cultural back-ground won her the admiration of groups with the most different interests which visited the White House.
