The wonderful story of Lionel Trains began on September 5, 1900. On that day, Joshua Lionel Cowen and a colleague established the Lionel Manufacturing Company, which was going to engage in 'the manufacture of electrical novelties.'

One of the company's first products was a flatbed trailer and track that Cowen sold to a local retailer as an animated display for products in his store window. The next day, the retailer returned for another display--his first customer had purchased the display instead of the products. The retailer continued to order 'displays,' and other stores followed. Cowen began offering his 'Electric Express' to consumers, and electric toy trains have made Lionel the favorite of hobbyists and collectors ever since.
