In 2019 the Barbie live action was announced. Almost immediately it was announced that Margot Robbie, famous for portraying Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, would play the beloved Barbara Millicent Roberts AKA Barbie.

People were happy to hear about Robbie portraying Barbie because they believe she fits the classic Barbie look. But it was not the only thing people were happy about. The movie’s director is none other than popular director Greta Gerwig, known for popular movies like Little Women 2019 and Lady Bird. What makes people hyped up about Gerwig is that she is considered a director who focuses on feminism and tries to apply that to her films. That, from the beginning, has people intrigued about what type of plot it could be. But for Barbie fans, Barbie being a feminist icon is not news, with 200 careers, a great style, and a great personality, Barbie has been an inspiration for decades.

What do we know about the plot of Barbie?

So far, we know that Barbie gets expelled from Barbie Land, the cause: not being perfect enough. This causes Barbie to venture into the real world where she will have to face different experiences. But Barbie is not alone throughout all this, her faithful companion and romantic interest Ken, portrayed by none other than Ryan Gosling, will accompany our strong heroine.

Who is in the Barbie Movie?

The movie has a great cast and has many familiar faces, and the reveal of the characters was as pink and bright as you imagined. Some of the cast include Helen Mirren as narrator, Will Ferrell, America Ferreira, Kate Mckinnon, Michael Cera and Emerald Fennell as Alan and Midge, Barbie and Ken’s best friends. Midge is particularly known not only among Barbie fans but also among the public because of the controversial pregnant Midge Barbie. Which nowadays is a very desired doll among Barbie collectors.

The movie also has a variety of Barbies and Kens, among them we can see president Barbie, doctor Barbie, lawyer Barbie, weird Barbie, and even mermaid Barbie portrayed by Dua Lipa who will also be part of the soundtrack.

Why is the Barbie movie trending?

Aside from the movie itself, many people are hooked on Barbie fever because of its aesthetic. The movie is already being praised because of its style, colors, sets, locations, and the outfits which are very true to the Barbie essence. The movie seems to have that beachy malibu style we can associate with Barbie. The Barbie aesthetic is so trendy right now, people have now given it a name, Barbiecore. So, if you have seen people dressing particularly brighter this Summer, that may be Barbie’s influence.

Although the Barbie movie looks like a blast, it also seems like it will touch different topics such as existential crisis and empowerment. Barbie fans are hoping that the Barbie movie will show all the positive sides of Barbie that we have all loved for years, such as Barbie teaching us that we can be anything we set our minds to.
