A Barbie Girl Out of This World!

A Barbie Girl Out of This World!

Look up at the stars tonight, and you might see Barbie on her first space trip with Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti! While heading off to the International Space Station just days ago, Cristoforetti invited her special companion up to zero gravity to inspire girls as young as 8 and 11 years old to succeed in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and answer all their questions just in time for the first day of World Space Week.

As of 2019, research has shown that young girls feel math and science are their least-strongest subjects in school. This translates to so many lost opportunities in a highly-paid industry. When asked why she decided to be an astronaut, 45-year-old Cristoforetti explained that the night sky and the “idea of flying to space” always gave her a “sense of adventure and exploration.”

Once her interest in outer space was sparked, she quickly found a secondary interest in science, technology, and piloting. Being an astronaut perfectly brings together all of Cristoforetti’s passions, she tells her viewers.

Cristoforetti and Barbie Inspire Young Girls

This wouldn't be the first time we see Cristoforetti interact with her younger audiences––her TikTok videos combine humor and education, racking up over one million views. Like Barbie, she will inspire the next generation of professionals, advancing scientific discoveries.

In honor of Cristoforetti, the first European female ISS commander, Mattel created a highly-exclusive, limited edition doll with Cristoforetti’s likeness. Proceeds from the sales will support Women in Aerospace Europe.

Mattel released their first astronaut-themed Barbie doll way back in 1965, and since then, there’s been an Astrophysicist Barbie, several space scientist Barbies, and more advanced versions of astronaut Barbie! One of our favorites? Mattel’s special edition Space Camp Barbie Doll broke barriers in 1998 with a fresh glam look, dehydrated food, and a blue flight suit modeled after real astronauts––now this Barbie’s ready for the zero gravity chamber!

“We Girls Can Do Anything” Barbie Dolls

Meanwhile, Mattel’s We Girls Can Do Anything Astronaut Barbie 1985 and 1994 reached iconic heights in their heyday and have become coveted collectible items you can find right here at We R Toys. The 1985 version features a hot pink sparkle space suit (and space skirt!) and a rockin’ blue eyeshadow look you can see from Mars to Venus! In 1994, Barbie sported a more authentic NASA look with glow-in-the-dark moon rocks and a helmet.

No matter what she wore, Barbie’s message was always clear: girls can be anything they want to be. And with today’s dolls being more inclusive than ever, every girl can find a Barbie they identify with and even look up to––especially if she’s in the night sky among the stars.

But what will happen once Cristoforetti and her mini lookalike come back to Earth? This history-making doll will find her home on display at ESA’s headquarters, just as she would sit on your collector’s shelf, being a constant reminder of life’s possibilities.
