Laurel and Hardy Oliver Hardy Action Figure in Suit 70th Anniversary NRFB

Laurel and Hardy are unique in their position as one of the most distinctive, enduring and recognizable film teams in the history of cinema. They starred in 105 two-reelers and feature films which have played in every corner of the world in theaters and on television. After appearing together in over a dozen films in the mid-1920s as independent players, the two actors, Laurel, a native of England, and Hardy, a native of Georgia, were officially paired as a team in the 1927 two-reeler film, "Hats Off." It was produced on nitrate film stock which disintegrates over time, and all copies of this film have since vanished.

The 1927 film, "Putting Pants on Phillip," was the beginning of a partnership which would span three decades. Despite their many years as leading Hollywood stars, Laurel and Hardy received only one Academy Award, presented in 1932 for their film short, "The Music Box," noted for the memorable scene in which the two attempt to deliver a piano to a hilltop home some 131 steps from the street. In 1961, at the urging of many leading Hollywood comedians, Laurel was awarded an honorary Oscar. While flattered by the attention, he regretted the award's timing, since it came four years after Hardy's death. Unquestionably the glory finally accorded their voluminous contribution to Hollywood legend was long overdue.
