orn in Marion Indiana on February 8th 1931, James Dean achieved the dizzying heights of major stardom in his mid-twenties after making only three films. In 1949, after graduating from high school, Dean moved to California to pursue an acting career. After 2 years he relocated to New York, was accepted into the legendary Actors Studio and got favorable reviews for supporting roles in several Broadway and TV appearances.

In March of 1954, he was offered the starring role as Cal in East of Eden and he returned to California to begin shooting. By September of 1955 he had completed filming of his second and third films, giving brilliant performances as Jim Stark in Rebel Without a Cause and Jett Rink in Giant. In all of these movies he played rebellious young men not unlike himself, giving eloquent expression to an entire generation of young people as the emerging rebel hero of the fifties. These films have all since become cinematic classics.

His career suddenly and tragically ended on September 30, 1955, at the age of 24 in a fatal accident on a lonely stretch of California highway as he was driving his prized Porche Spyder to the auto races in Salinas. His passionate performances, so fresh and explosive in the mid-fifties, still resonate today and his icon status remains forever intact.
