Description
In September of 1959, Brig. Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell, Jr., the Chief of Staff of XVII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, N.C., formed the Strategic Army Corp Parachute Team, which was formally activated and renamed the U.S. Parachute team on June 1, 1961. The team members were assigned a three-fold mission: first to perform live aerial demonstrations for the American public and spread goodwill for the Army, second to compete in national and international parachute competitions and third to research and develop new parachute techniques and equipment.
The team, nicknamed the Golden Knights, has accomplished its mission above. and beyond the call of duty, performing over 7,500 aerial demonstrations and producing 119 national champions and 23 world champion parachutists since 1959. They are ranked among the top parachute teams in the world as aerial performers and competitors. The United States Army Parachute Team consists of 84 men and women divided into six sections: two demonstrations teams, known as the Black and Gold teams; two competition teams, the Style and Accuracy Team and the Free-Fall Formation team; and an aviation section with a fleet of five aircraft and headquarters section. '
The Black and Gold teams spend about 200 days each year traveling the world performing in airshows and conducting aerial demonstrations at state fairs and sporting events. Wherever the Golden Knights go, they strive to promote Army prestige and build goodwill with the public.. Recently, former President Bush, as a salute to his crewmen that died in World War II, jumped with the Golden Knights, later saying it was an experience he'll carry with him for the rest of his life.
