Born July 1, 1920, on the Big Island of Hawaii near Holualoa, Sakata grew up, working on various plantations throughout Hawaii until he came across a physical fitness magazine and decided to start weight training. Excelling in his new found sport, he soon entered local bodybuilding competitions and won several championships After an outstanding performance in the US Senior Nationals, he tried out for, and made the US Olympic team, where he took the silver medal for light-heavyweight-lifting at the 1948 Summer Olympic Games. Soon after, Sakata decided to leave his amateur weight lifting days behind him and become a professional wrestler.
As a pro-wrestler, he traveled across America and Japan. In 1963, Sakata toured Australia, wrestling under the villainous name of Tosh Togo. From there he left for Europe. It was on British televisions that Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli first saw Sakata and decided to cast him as Oddjob in the upcoming Bond film, Goldfinger. Sakata spent many months mastering the lethal art of "bowler tossing" and as a result, Oddjob proved to be one of the most iconic of all the Bond villains. He enjoyed this role to such a degree that he took Oddjob as an informal nickname and kept the bowler hat as a sort of professional trademark. Sakata went on to play in several other film and television productions until his death in 1982.
