Description
As the famous behemoths of the steam era were retired, the Union Pacific continued to reach for higher horsepower and great efficiency. The railroad experimented with powerful turbine locomotives. One design featured sheltered walkways along the sides, allowing train and maintenance crews better access to the internal components. Because these locomotives appeared to have covered porches, the name of this new turbine class became obvious: Veranda. The powerful Verandas hauled freight until they were retired in the late 1960s.
