Description
The tenders the accompanied the 1939 super-speed Hiawatha streamliners were modified to include partially ribbed sides and the bold Hiawatha paint scheme. They carried 25 tons of coal and 20,000 gallons of water. This enabled the 4-6-4 steam engine to generate the increased pulling capacity needed to handle trains of 15 and 15 cars- a substantial improvement over the 4-4-2 engines that powered 6-car trains just a few years earlier. Although the Milwaukee Road had considered using diesel power for the 1939 Hiawatha, it did not make the switch to diesels for its passenger trains until 1941.
