Description
Harley-Davidson introduced the "factory custom" in 1971 at a time when customizing was so popular that many a new motorcycle's first ride was from the showroom-straight to the customizer's shop! The new FX Super Glide, designed by Willie G. Davidson, boasted the 1200-cc engine and frame of the FL touring bike combined with the lighter front end of the XL Sportster. It also featured the stepped seat and "boat-tail" rear fender similar to the 1970 Sportster.
Although the 1971 FX Super Glide was only a modest success, the concept of the factory custom developed into a strong segment of the Harley-Davidson line.
