Description

It has been written that without Sacagawea. Lewis and Clark may have never made it across the crest of the Rockies and eventually to the Pacific Ocean. While much has been written about Sacagawea, little has been written about the boy she carried on her back for more than 2000 miles. Only 55 days old when Lewis and Clark's expedition left Ft. Mandan, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau would work his way into the hearts of the travelers. Before long he was given the nick- name "Pomp." Some reports claim it was a Shoshoni word for firstborn, and others claim that it was a description of his pompous "little dancing boy" antics Captain Clark, who had grown especially fond of the boy, named landmarks after Baptiste. Near the Yellowstone River, he named an unusual rock outcropping "Pompeys Tower" (today it is called "Pompeys Pillar").

He also named a nearby stream "Baptiests Creek." Upon their return, Clark even offered to educate Sacagawea's son and raise him as his own. The offer was accepted some five years later. After finishing his education at 18 years of age, Baptiste traveled to Europe with a newfound friend, a prince from Germany, who was intrigued by Baptiste's unique combination of frontier skills and cultural education. Baptiste furthered his edu cation and enjoyed a royal lifestyle for six years before returning to the western frontier. There he carved out a monumental mountain-man career, so remarkable that some have thought of him as more legend than real
