Description

She was everybody's tootsey-wootsey, the ideal and idol of millions for over twenty years! They called her the Gibson Girl after Charles Dana Gibson, the magazine illustrator who created her in 1890.

The Gibson Girl's popularity grew as the 20th century began with optimism and energy! Immigrants were pouring into the United States looking for the American Dream and Kodak Brownie cameras were available to photograph it. Women were being seen more out of the home, riding bicycles, playing golf and tenuis, and working in record numbers!

Let's journey into the past and accompany Barbie for a walk in the park on a Sunday, Carrying her lacy parasol in protect her beautiful skin, she stope to attach a charming nosegay of violets just given to her by her admirer Ken". She bats her long eyelashes in gratitude-a Gibson Girl is a bit of a flirt, bur always a lady!

Barbie wears a skirt full enough for walking, yet stunningly stylish in blue moiré with a matching cape lined in pink.

Her shirtwaist blouse is a distinctly American fashion innovation, with a lacy jabot at the neck and gigot (leg-of-mutton) sleeves giving a fullness to the bodice which accentuates her tiny waist. Corsets keep waists small but don't have the steel- reinforcing of earlier times.

The band in the park is playing In the Good Old Summertime, and Gibson Girl Barbie sports a straw hat called a boater over her pompadour hairdo. Wisps of hair frame her long neck and draw attention to her Art Noveau style brooch with a simulated "garnet", a favorite gem of the era

As we leave the park, a handsome gentleman friend offers Barbie a ride on a bicycle built for two. She politely declines for she has already promised to go with Ken and some friends for a spin in his exciting new horseless carriage (automobile). He turns a crank to start the engine and they drive away into the past where the Gibson Girl is forever young in her timeless beauty and charm.
