In one of the fiercest fights of World War II, the conflict over a chain of islands in the Pacific led to a grueling, six-month struggle known as the Battle of Guadalcanal. It was perhaps the only battle of the war that was fought on land, in the air and at sea. On all fronts, this once beautiful, tropical island was transformed into a wretched nightmare.
The United States Marines landed on Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942, scattering Japanese enemy soldiers into the dense jungle. It took the Marines only one day to recapture the island. But the Japanese were determined not to lose this one! Faced with the threat of deadly spiders and snakes, crocodiles, swarms of malaria carrying mosquitoes, knee-deep mud, and a rain forest cover that instantly turned day into night, the Marines were more in awe of the enemy's zealous capacity for killing.
Deadly attacks took place every night, intensified by the jungle surroundings. The still night air echoed with exploding shells, torpedoes, grenades, gunfire and blazing bombs that put the Marines to the ultimate tests of survival. Fighting on all levels was constant and intense, but the Marines persevered and brought America to a decisive victory.
