Description
Trained in the science of engineering and in the art of war, the combat engineer played a crucial role in the conflict in Vietnam. Armed with weapons of combat and tools of necessity, these engineers waged a difficult battle in the menacing jungles of Vietnam. Combat engineer units were deployed to build much-needed roads and bridges and to navigate uncharted areas, creating pathways for American troops to forge across enemy territory. This mission was of utmost importance and these brave soldiers withstood unbelievably harsh conditions while battling both nature and an extremely cunning enemy.
The dense jungles of Vietnam required the U.S. Engineer to construct base camps, roads, bridges and airfields. Often these men would be forced to rappel from helicopters through the jungle canopy and into enemy territory, using their chain saws to cut clearings for landing zones. Their construction operations faced vicious enemy resistance, and they were often ambushed. Such impediments required combat engineer units to be alert at all times, often trading their chain saws for M-16's-never forgetting that they were both engineer and soldier. They worked as an efficient and organized team, anticipating and thwarting possible enemy attacks or responding quickly and skillfully to an unforgiving environment. Their ability to transform jungle trails into passable roads and to build bridges over impassable waters in an environment where the possibility of danger lurked behind every shadow-is proof of the U.S. Engineers' dedication to duty and a testament to their heroism.
