Description
VIETNAM - U.S.M.C. KHE SANH
Marines garrisoned at Khe Sanh during the early months of 1968 experienced extremely harsh conditions while engaging in close combat with an enemy that outnumbered the U.S. forces. Under a steady barrage of artillery and mortar fire from the North Vietnamese, the Marines relied on close air support, artillery fire and their own raw courage. During the battle of Khe Sanh, NVA forces massed outside the wire and stormed the Marine lines. Often, the last bastion of defense for the Marines was saturating the enemy with hand grenades to repel their attack. Despite the numerous NVA attempts, the Marines stationed at Khe Sanh held their ground and successfully maintained control of this highly strategic position just 15 miles south of the Demilitarized Zone
