As the principal land fighting element of the U.S. Armed Forces, an Army infantry soldier is trained, armed and equipped to fight on foot. He must be prepared to operate in various geographical locations and climatic conditions, in accordance with the Army's doc-trine of exercising an initiative to defeat opposing forces.

Action Soldier G.I. Joe completed Basic Training in 1965. This new recruit came with a footlocker that was an exact replica of the one used by actual soldiers to store their uniforms, weapons and equipment. Footlockers with specialized equipment were available for all four branches of the service by 1968 and reissued in 1969.

A G.I. Joe Action Soldier was prepared for special assignment any-time, anywhere. The original battle cry of the 1960s can still be heard: "G.I. Joe, G.I. Joe fighting man from head to toe. On the land, on the sea, in the air...'
