The Few, The Proud, The Brave... The Marines --- The Battle For Hill 484

The Battle for Hill 484, which was just south of the DMZ took place in October of 1966. It stands as one of the most heroic battles fought by the US Marines in the War in Vietnam. In the War in Vietnam, the longest conflict in the history of the United States, the US Marines suffered over 100,000 casualties, more than in any war in which they were ever engaged.

In the course of turning back waves of North Vietnamese Army Regulars the Marines of the 4th Division had sustained many casualties. Many Marines risked their own lives evacuating the wounded and often had to carry their fellow Marines for miles until they were able to reach helicopter landing zones. In the process of carrying their wounded comrades to safety the Marines faced torrents of gun and mortar fire. Through bravery and determination the Marines were able to save many lives and finally secure Hill 484 from the North Vietnamese Army Regulars. The US Marines once again illustrated the intense loyalty and fellowship that throughout the history of the 'Corps' has always bound them together.
