The U.S. Navy sometimes uses specially trained dolphins to help them search for underwater enemy mines that have been left behind to destroy large ships. Dolphins locate mines using their superb sonar and place an anchor device near each one. A floating buoy, attached to each anchor device, rises to the surface to pinpoint the mine's location. The dolphins are specifically trained to avoid any contact with the mines. After the dolphins finish their work and leave the area, Navy divers arrive to remove the mines. To help the divers identify the type of mines found, the dolphins may have cameras fitted to their dorsal fins. The divers and their dolphin partners develop a close relationship of friendship and respect. The dolphins swim freely in the ocean to conduct their part in the operation, and willingly return to the vessel that transported them to the search location. These intelligent, friendly sea mammals provide the U.S. Navy with valuable assistance in clearing waters for safe marine travel.
