Description
It was a scene reminiscent of World War II when America and its allies fought to liberate the world from tyranny. In August 1990, Iraq invaded and conquered its neighbor Kuwait. Appalled by Iraq's blatant act of aggression, United States President George Bush exclaimed. "This cannot stand!" Within a short time, the U.S. assembled a coalition force of 29 nations and from August 1990 to January 1991, it amassed the largest combined military force since World War II. By mid-January 1991, with Iraqi forces still entrenched in Kuwait, President Bush ordered the coalition's commander-in-chief, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, to initiate offensive actions against Iraq. On February 24th, the land campaign began and two days later, coalition forces had Kuwait City surrounded. Fearing the worst, Iraq's occupation forces attempted to escape from the city but were annihilated by allied air strikes. On February 27th, the victorious coalition forces entered the city and were welcomed by throngs of celebrating Kuwaitis. The war was over and Kuwait was free once more.
