When motorcycles first came on the scene, police officers discovered they offered the best of both worlds: the agility of a bicycle and the speed of a car. They gave law enforcement a new way to deal with crime. But motorcycles have always been more than just a way to get around. In addition, the Electra Glide has saddlebags on either side of the rear wheel, front and rear emergency lights and plenty of chrome-plated parts that gleam with pride.

Tradition is big with officers "on motors." The uniform is unique and hearkens back to the outfit worn by officers mounted on horseback: breeches tucked into black high top boots, a leather jacket, gloves with the cuffs rolled back one turn, and sunglasses. It's as if the motorcycle demanded a look to match its inherent coolness. Even the officers who ride motorcycles are a breed apart: independent self-starters, meticulous in the spit-shine look of them and their Harley-Davidson.

Generally, there are two kinds of motorcycle police: motor officers who are attached to the traffic division and take care of vehicle code infractions, and regular patrol officers who are responsible for a range of calls including but not limited to traffic. Because of the motorcycle's easy maneuverability, motorcycle officers are often the first on the scene of accidents. They create an unforgettable image when they form a motorcade: that impressive buffer of protection around important individuals, or as the officers call them, the "secure package."
