Description
It was July 16, 1969, the date Apollo XI made its historic launch into outer-space. The mission was manned by three astronauts: Edwin E "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr. of the Air Force, Navy veteran Neil A. Armstrong, and Michael Collins, also of the Air Force. On July 20, while Lieutenant Colonel Collins remained in lunar orbit, Aldrin and Armstrong piloted the Eagle lunar landing module, descending to the moon's surface. The two astronauts spent more than two hours walking on the lunar surface. They gathered 47 lbs. of soil samples, took photographs and conducted multiple scientific experiments. They erected an American flag and talked, via satellite, with U.S. President Richard M. Nixon in the White House. The Apollo XI flight attracted tremendous interest around the world, and inspired thought that humanity was embarking upon a new plateau of evolution.
