The Vietnam War tested the ability of the U.S. Army soldier. Even with powerful air support and other elements of modern mechanized warfare, the conflict was largely conducted on the ground in villages, dense jungles and flooded rice paddies. Intense enemy resistance required powerful but portable supporting armaments. Such a weapon was found in the 60mm M-19 mortar-often the quickest supporting arm to bring into play.

Each Mortarman relied on his equipment as much as his own personal resolve to battle the treacherous elements of Vietnam-mosquitoes, parasites, jungle rot, leeches, excessive heat and violent monsoons. Though well-equipped, U.S. infantrymen had to be tough, disciplined and well-trained. They performed their service in Vietnam with honor, distinction and an unsurpassed dedication to duty.
