Description
Australians have long enjoyed a sense of security. Their isolated island continent seemed too remote, too unassailable; an unlikely target for any but the most ambitious aggressor. That sense of tranquil security was shattered with the 1982 invasion of the Falkland Islands. This one event proved beyond a doubt that invasion was possible, even for an island. Military officials found this particularly disturbing. The Australian Army and S.A.S. regiment were already spread too thin dealing with drug and wildlife smuggling and illegal immigration.
It was clear that Australia needed a rapid response force with the capability to react instantly in the event of a threat. A quick reaction brigade was formed and designated 'The Operational Deployment Force' or 'ODF'. These 'Australian Minutemen' remain on a constant state of alert with capability to deploy on very short or no notice. Heavy reliance on intelligence gathered by Regional Force Surveillance Units and other, more conventional military sources, enable the ODF to maintain vigilance with a clear understanding of developing situations.
