During the Korean War, United States Marine Corps scout marksmen contributed their valuable skills to the combat. The scout marksmen were highly trained individuals with specialized capabilities and equipment. They trained for two distinct missions, which remain the missions of Marine scout marksmen today. The first mission was to deliver precise, long-range fire on selected targets from concealed positions. The second mission was to act as scouts on the battlefield, collecting and reporting information. Scout marksmen needed excellent long-range marksmanship skills. They also had to be able to camouflage themselves, hiding, blending in or deceiving the enemy so as to be undetectable. They often had to wait for long periods before the right moment presented itself. honing their patience and ability to tolerate challenging environmental conditions. Marine marksmen in the Korean War used the bolt action M1903A1 rifle, which was mounted with an eight-power target scope. The 30 caliber military rifle was effective from 400 to 600 yards and used M72 match ammo or the more easily obtainable M2 ball ammo. It was the "standard" weapon for Marine scout marksmen and they used it with effectiveness during the war.
