When Grover Cleveland was inaugurated as President in 1885 he was a bachelor but very soon he and Frances Folsom became secretly engaged. That was in June, of 1885, they were married in the White House one year later. During the first year of his administration his married sister, Rose Elizabeth Cleveland, served as his hostess. All of Washington, not to mention the nation, was excited over the fact that a bride would be First Lady. Frances Folsom Cleveland's youth gave new interest to state entertaining, and her charming personality won her many friends.
