Description
The Clydesdale breed originated in Lanarkshire County, Scotland. The breed derives its name from the previous name for Lanarkshire which was Clydesdale. Mid-eighteen century development of local coal fields created the need for large, powerful draft animals to pull loads of coal from the mines. Local farmers responded to the demand by crossing native mares with larger imported Flemish stallions. The cross resulted in the powerful, impressive Clydesdale.
