Description
Germany pioneered the use of halftracks during WWII, with both armored and unarmored types being employed in huge numbers. In fact, the Sd.Kfz.251 was the most widely produced halftrack of the war, with more than 15,200 examples manufactured. The standard Sd.Kfz.251/1 Schutzenpanzerwagen armed with a 7.92mm machine gun was designed to transport panzergrenadiers into battle. The Ausf. C type of the Sd.Kfz.251 appeared in mid-1940, and changes in production resulted in a simplified forward engine armored plate. However, the many angled plates still made it difficult to manufacture the halftrack efficiently and it was eventually succeeded by the simplified Ausf.D in 1943.
