When Action Comics #1 hit Depression-era news-stands in June of 1938, the world had never seen any-thing like Superman. No hero before had combined super-powers, a colorful costume, and an optimistic outlook, so the Man of Steel was an overnight success. But the road to Superman's success was not a smooth one. Although Superman was originally conceived in 1933 by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, it would be five years before the Man of Steel found a publish-er. Superman went through a number of variations during that time, but by Action Comics #1 he had gained his red and blue costume, alien origins, big-city news-paper setting, and, most importantly. an intriguing supporting cast.

Chief among them were Lois Lane, ace reporter for The Daily Planet, the news-paper where Clark Kent found a job upon arriving in Metropolis. Lois first viewed newcomer Clark as a rival, but as the years went by, she came to see him as a friend. Even late into the 1970s, Lois spent a great deal of her time trying to discover Superman's secret identity. Her sometimes clever, some-times wacky schemes were a constant distraction from the genuine evils that Superman had vowed to fight. In more recent times, the two have become engaged, and Superman revealed to Lois his dual identity as Clark Kent.
