The astounding success story of modern country music begins with the sound of Randy Travis. Radio programmers and music historians point to the arrival of this distinctive stylist as a benchmark. So when Dreamworks Records launched its first venture into Nashville music in 1997, it turned to a leader as its first signing. During his first decade of stardom, Randy Travis sold more than 20 million records, placed 25 singles in the country Top 10 (with 19 #1 berths), and paved the way for Garth Brooks, Clint Black, Alan Jackson and the rest of his multi-platinum contemporaries. He started out recording for a tiny label and in classic country fashion, drove from radio station to radio station throughout the South to promote his work.
