Description

The astounding success story of modern country music begins with the sound of Randy Travis. Radio programmers and music historians point to the arrival of this distinctive stylist as a benchmark. His unflinching honesty, unerring sense of song craftsmanship, rugged good looks and fierce commitment to country's finest traditions made Randy a lightning rod for the entire "new country" explosion. So when Dreamworks Records launched its first venture into Nashville music in 1997, it turned to a leader as its first signing. During his first decade of stardom, Randy Travis sold more than 20 million records, placed 25 singles in the country Top 10 (with 19 #1 berths), and paved the way for Garth Brooks, Clint Black, Alan Jackson and the rest of his multi-platinum contemporaries. He started out recording for a tiny label and in classic country fashion, drove from radio station to radio station throughout the South to promote his work. After five years of paying dues in North Carolina, he deemed himself ready for Nashville. Randy secured a deal with Warner Bros. Records. In 1985, the label released the single "On the Other Hand" (which would eventually became a No. 1 country hit. Randy headed into the '90s as county's top grossing touring attraction. In 1994 he launched his film career with a variety of roles.
