The Miami Department of Fire & Rescue was established in 1898. In 1904, the Department consisted of 1 paid fireman, 125 volunteers, a hose wagon with two horses, and a hand hose reel with buckets. That same year, the first Fire Station was built on a lot donated by Mr. Henry Flagler, located at what would now be 74 West Flagler Street.

The Department has been a leader within the Fire-Rescue Service. Some of the many accomplishments achieved have been firsts in the industry:
•Equipping all fire apparatus with two way radios, and fog nozzles
•Equipping all firefighters with self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
•Developing and successfully implementing the first field defibrillator and transmission of electrocardiograms by radio to the hospital, in conjunction with the University of Miami Operating one of the Nation's first Advanced Life Support Systems (1962)
•Successfully implementing the M.A.S.T. suit (Military Anti-Shock Trousers)
•The first SWAT Medic Program

Over, 154 years after inception, the current Department of Fire-Rescue answers the new challenges of today. responding to 75,259 alarms a year, or an average of 206 per day (the highest alarm activity per firefighter in the country). The Department now consists of 634 paramedic/firefighters and 70 civilian personnel, serving a resident population of 400,000, and a daytime population of approximately 1,000,000,
